Overview
An AVS decline occurs when a transaction fails the Address Verification System (AVS) check during authorization. This security measure compares the billing address entered at checkout with the address on file for your card.
If the system detects a mismatch, the transaction is declined to prevent potential fraud.
The good news is that in many cases, you can quickly approve the transaction yourself using the AVS bypass feature in Custodia.
What Is an AVS Decline?
AVS (Address Verification System) is a fraud prevention control used during online or card-not-present transactions.
When you enter your billing details, the merchant sends that information for verification. If the zipcode does not match what is on file for your card, the transaction is automatically declined.
You may see this decline in your Custodia notification.
How to Bypass an AVS Decline
If the transaction is legitimate, you can approve it directly from the Custodia decline notification.
Step 1: Open the Decline Notification
When a transaction is declined, you will receive a push notification in the Custodia mobile application.
Step 2: Select βITS MEβ
If you recognize the charge, tap ITS ME in the notification.
This action temporarily enables an AVS bypass for that specific transaction.
Step 3: Retry the Transaction
After selecting ITS ME, attempt the transaction again within 24 hours.
If retried within that time frame, the transaction should process successfully.
